Basic Resources: The only sector to increase their score in 2019-2020

By Karolin Jansson

Compared to last year, the average score for all companies ranked in Webranking by Comprend 2019-2020 has gone down by 1.9 points (out of 100). The only sector to show positive growth was Basic Resources, which went against the tide and managed to raise its overall score by 1.8 points.

Throughout the years, the Basic Resources sector has included roughly 30 ranked companies. Of the 29 companies that were included in the ranking in 2015-2016, 22 have remained the same in this latest ranking. The sector has also managed to continuously increase its score every year between 2016 and 2020.

Standout performance in Investor Relations information with only a few weak spots

The Basic Resources companies stand out as being one of few to improve their score in IR and shareholder information criteria. Companies generally score low across these two areas, and IR in particular, which covers information on the corporate investment story and megatrends.

This year, the Basic Resources sector scored an overall 40% in this section of Webranking, clearly outperforming the general average of merely 26%. Even though the sector's score leaves room for improvement, the majority of the companies included in the ranking tended to be good at explaining why one should invest in them and presenting a coherent image of how they are funded.

On the whole, Basic Resources companies outshined other sectors, with above average scores in all the criteria covered by Webranking by Comprend 2019-2020. However, digging deeper into the data reveals that only 12% of the companies in this sector have built an online annual report for their investors. Having an online version of the annual report to complement to the traditional PDF and print reports is a more holistic approach from an accessibility and user friendliness point of view, and has been known to increase visitor engagement. Basic Resources companies should therefore consider working on including this option in the future.

Top performers

The average score for the Basic Resources sector was 52.4 points out of 100 – a strong performance for the sector, with individual company scores ranging from 29.6 to 73.9.

The top three performers in this sector are Stora Enso, SSAB, and UPM, where Stora Enso managed to climb from fifth to first place in just one year and now rests at the forefront of the pack, especially when it comes to their homepage and sustainability information.
