Eni, Snam, and Hera Group top the Italian podium

By Greta Castelli

The Italian weekly L’Economia del Corriere (PDF) reported exclusively today the findings of the latest Webranking by Comprend 2019-2020 Italian edition in collaboration with Lundquist. This year the research evaluated 112 Italian companies. The findings reveal a year of improvement for Italian companies, with one out of three companies passing the Webranking stress test and achieving over 50 points in their rankings – a clear jump from the one quarter pass-rate Italian companies had three years ago. This is a clear demonstration of commitment to corporate digital transparency.

Oil and gas company Eni takes first place again this year, with 92.5 points out of 100. Snam comes in second with 91.3 points, and Hera Group is third with 90.0 points.

Italy falls in with the top performers in energy and financial sectors

Shifting our attention to company performance per sector, we find Eni atop the list yet again in the Oil & Gas sector, and Snam followed closely by Hera Group in the Utilities sector. In the Financial sector, Generali is the best amongst European insurance groups, followed by Poste Italiane, and Mediobanca representing the best of banking.

Italian companies top the transparency rankings in Europe

Five Italian companies have secured a place in the Top 10 of the Europe 500 list. Eni and Snam wear their crowns proudly, topping the list in first and second place respectively, followed by the Finnish company Wärtsilä. Terna jumped to 4th place, and Generali stands firmly at 5th. Poste Italiane edges on up to 9th place with an 8-position improvement from last year. Leonardo on the other hand had a 16-position improvement from last year, with the top 10 just barely out of their reach. In the first 25 positions we can also find Prysmian and Mediobanca.

Comparing their performance in the various sections of research, we see similar scores in the sections related to reporting and presentation of past data (company presentation, press releases, financial statements and information on the stock) and a larger gap on topics including strategy, sustainability and ability to attract talents (careers).

Italian companies are particularly strong in reporting but are less inclined to communicate their future vision. Presentation of a mission, strategy, objectives and investment stories are less frequent than in the overall European cohort.
